Indians: Tribe adds veteran reliever

The Indians added potential bullpen depth Thursday, signing free-agent right-hander Matt Capps to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league training camp.

Capps, 29, is an eight-year veteran with 138 saves in the majors and a lifetime 29-33 record and 3.52 ERA in 444 relief appearances with the Pirates, Nationals and Twins.

A seventh-round draft pick of Pittsburgh's in 2002, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound Capps has been a closer since 2007. He saved 14 games for Minnesota last year, but shoulder inflammation limited him to 30 appearances – 1-4, 3.68 ERA.

The Twins declined to exercise a $6 million option on Capps for the 2013 season, paying him a $250,000 buyout and making him a free agent. He earned $4.5 million last year.

Capps was an All-Star in 2010 when he posted a combined 5-3 record, 2.47 ERA and 42 saves in 74 games for the Nationals and Twins.

Capps will compete for what is expected to be two openings in Cleveland’s bullpen.
