Wilkes Villa shooting under investigation

ELYRIA – A shooting Thursday in Wilkes Villa is currently under investigation, according to Elyria police.

At 2:15 a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to the 100 block of Bohannon Court for a victim that was bleeding from his left shoulder and arm. The man, Edward Hopkins, 30, of Elyria, said he was visiting the mother of his child when he was shot by a man that he believed was going to rob the home.

Lt. Chris Costantino said Hopkins told police he was at the woman’s Bohannon Court home when two men knocked on the door and asked for a lighter. Hopkins said he went to retrieve a lighter, and when he returned, one of the men said to “lay it down.”

Hopkins said at this point, he believed the men were going to rob the home, so he tried to shut the door in their face. He told police he then heard a gun shot and realized he had been shot in the arm.

Costantino said the man was transferred to EMH Elyria Medical Center, but Hopkins was conscious and able to talk to officers at the scene. The incident is under investigation, he said.

Hopkins described the suspects as two black males, approximately 6-feet-tall and 155 pounds. One man was wearing a black shirt and black pants. The other was wearing an Army bucket hat, white T-shirt and dark pants. That man was carrying a semi-automatic handgun.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Elyria Police Department’s Detective Bureau at (440) 322-1926.
