South Amherst mayor race too close to call

SOUTH AMHERST — Unofficial results indicate that South Amherst Village elected challenger Barbara Becker by a margin of nine votes in the nonpartisan race for mayor last night.

Less than one percent of the electorate chose Becker over incumbent Ronald Schmitz, mayor of South Amherst since 2004.

Becker was hesitant to celebrate too early.

“I’m just waiting to the official results,” she said.

If the results go her way, Becker has plans for the future of South Amherst Village. Her biggest issue?

“Just trying to keep the Village moving in the right direction, to stay within our finances and so forth.”

Becker served as a nurse at EMH Medical Center in Elyria and is currently an adjunct professor at Lorain County Community College; she is also a member of the South Amherst Village Council. Becker was educated at Berlin Heights High School and received her degree in Nursing from Oberlin College.

Schmitz worked for the South Amherst Board of Public Affairs from 1969 to 1976, and the Village Council from 1976 to 2004. He was not optimistic about the results changing in his favor.

“I was kind of surprised,” he said. “You put forty-two years into something, and you don’t expect someone who doesn’t know what she’s doing to win.”
