The heavy we snowfall that everyone awoke to this morning may have made for sloppy roads and slow goes to work, but otherwise appeared to have caused no serious problems.

A number of minor accidents were reported across the area, but none were said to have produced any serious injuries. Reports ranged from a numbers of vehicles that spun out on Route 113 between Lake Avenue and Murray Ridge Road, to instances of a car in the median of Route 2 around Sheffield, where police and fire personnel responded to reports of flames coming from a truck. Initial information from police said the vehicle’s brakes caught fire, but no one was injured.

No area schools closed, although afternoon kindergarten classes were canceled at the North Ridgeville Education Center.

In Elyria, some 50 to 60 early-morning phone calls were received by school personnel from parents.

“They were mainly due to people checking to see if we were open,” said Carrie Weese, Elyria City Schools administrative assistant for communications and public affairs. “We had a few upset parents who were irate that school was being held.”

Parents were advised it was up to them whether to send children to school. “We always tell them if a child misses school, they can make up the work.”

Firelands Schools Superintendent Greg Ring said a portion of the school district’s mult-phased power system went out about 7 a.m.

“We still had heat and lights in most classrooms but we were under reduced power for a little while,” he said.

Officials learned power went out at the high school and elementary school due to problems at a substation in Henrietta Township.

Both buildings were without power for about 25 minutes starting around 9:30 a.m. while repairs were being made. “All electricity was off so repairs could be made,” Ring said. “Everything was restored by 10 a.m.”

A few buses ran a bit slower than normal due to the snowfall, but the district experienced no other problems, Ring said.
