ELYRIA - A Lorain County Community College nursing student was crowned the 29th Apple Festival queen Saturday, beating out eight others.
Robin Bokor said she never expected to win but had so much fun competing last year she thought she'd do it again.
"I'm overwhelmed," Robin said. "I wasn't expecting to win. I'm shocked, but thrilled."
Robin jumped when her name was called and cried tears of happiness as she was crowned.
Robin also won for Best Costume - Apple Betty Dessert. She will take home more than $3,000 in cash and prizes - which will come in handy for her schooling.
"I'm studying to be a nurse practitioner, followed by cardiology," she said.
Robin's question during the formal gown portion of the competition was what advice she'd give a younger sister.
"One of the most important thing you can do is setting high morals," she told the judges.
Cash and prizes were donated by more than 45 Elyria businesses, including Bellacino's, Cracker Barrel, Posh A Salon, Harvest Cafe, Apples Foods, Levit Jewelers, Sunoco and others.
Scores were based on creative costume, poise, personality, appearance, conversational aptitude and group talent.
Pageant Chairwoman Linda Brown said the girls worked hard preparing for the competition in Ely Square.
"It is a long, hard road for them to get here," Brown said.
