Plant to produce car-battery materials proposed for Elyria

ELYRIA -- The chemical company BASF has proposed to build in Elyria the North American continent’s largest factory to supply materials to makers of lithium-ion batteries for use in autos.

BASF and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois have signed a worldwide licensing agreement to mass produce and market Argonne’s patented composite cathode materials to manufacturers of advanced lithium-ion batteries, the company and the lab said in a joint statement released today.

Construction of the plant would be contingent on BASF’s winning a grant from the Department of Energy, the statement said. It did not say when the plant would be built, where in Elyria it would be built or how many people it would employ.
