Antonio, (Tony, Red) A. Zampieri died unexpectedly Friday, February 7, 2014 surrounded by his loving children. He was born September 5, 1924 in Piney Fork, Ohio.

When the United States went to war Antonio enlisted in the United States Navy, serving both in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a seaman in the European Theater and participated in D-Day, The Normandy Invasion. Antonio married the love of his life on February 12, 1949. He would have celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary with his bride, Bonnie on Wednesday. Antonio worked at United States Steel Corporation, Lorain, retiring July 31, 1983. He was a lifelong active member of the AFL-CIO Local 1104 and served in various positions over the years. After his retirement he became active in Steelworkers of America Retired. Antonio was also very active in politics. He worked tirelessly for Democratic candidates over five decades.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie, (nee Tietsort); daughters, Maria Gesmond (Louis), Linda Brennan (John); and son, Anthony (Young). He was a wonderful grandfather to Damien Vitale (Jill), Michelle Ocepek (Eric), Sarah Lyons (Dan), Angela Zampieri, Katy Biggs (Dan), David Duggan (Val) and Anthony Zampieri. He was a great grandfather to six amazing grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn Whetsell; and a special niece, Heather Whetsell; nephews, Joseph Modock and Dean Zampieri.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Maria Zampieri; his step-mother who raised him from infancy, Johanna Zampieri; brothers, Nicholas (Tony), Dominic, Joseph; and beloved sister, Theresa. Family will receive friends Monday, February 10, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. The funeral service will be Tuesday, February 11 at 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain. Military rites will be conducted.
