ELYRIA — A Detroit mother who killed two of her children in a July 2009 crash on the Ohio Turnpike was sentenced today to three years probation.
Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge called Setita Patrick’s actions a mistake after he imposed the sentence. Assistant County Prosecutor Nick Hanek had pushed for prison time for Patrick.
Patrick, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, failure to control and three counts of failure to use child restraints.
Defense attorney J. Anthony Rich said Patrick fell asleep at the wheel and wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Ohio Highway Patrol reported that Patrick’s 2004 Kia minivan swerved into another lane and struck a 2006 PT Cruiser drive by Jose Arzuage of Lorain. The minivan flipped several times, ejecting thee child passengers onto the highway.
Jamel El-Armin, 5, and Alexia Patrick, 10, were killed, while then-5-month-old Kevin Green Jr. survived.
