Avon school levy passes

AVON — The third time was indeed the charm for Avon schools, as the hard-fought school levy passed on the third try this year.

Issue 2 passed, 4,452 to 4,275, or, 51.01 percent to 48.99 percent.

The 10-year, $4.45 million, 5.9-mill levy will add $180.17 in costs per $100,000 of home value. The money will be used for operating expenses such as salaries, utilities, insurance, supplies, textbooks and transportation.

The levy failed, 2,389 to 1,864, in May and by an even wider margin, 3,043 to 2,071, in August. The May vote was the first time since 1993 that an Avon school levy was defeated.

Without the money from the levy, or any other additional revenue, the district projected that it would fall into a deficit in the 2011-12 school year and be $20 million in debt by 2014.
