CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who disappeared Monday while swimming in Lake Erie near Cleveland.
A woman called the joint rescue coordination center in Cleveland at about 7:30 p.m. Monday to report that her father, of Bratenahl, appeared to be drowning. She said he had been swimming in the water near a boat when he was hit by a large wave and didn't resurface. Authorities said he wasn't wearing a life jacket.
Crews from the Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources searched through the night Monday and continued Tuesday. A Coast Guard helicopter from Detroit provided aerial search Tuesday.
The Coast Guard halted its search at 3 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
The man's name hasn't been released.
