COLUMBUS — Ohioans making resolutions to get fit in the new year may be surprised later if they try to cancel those new gym memberships.
The state’s attorney general is urging consumers to carefully read their contracts before signing up for a health club.
Attorney General Mike DeWine said his office received about 125 complaints involving fitness centers last year. He said a commonly reported problem involved cancellations. Some consumers said they had trouble getting rid of their memberships or the business kept charging them after they had canceled.
Under state law, Ohioans have three business days to cancel contracts for dance studio lessons and health spa services, such as gym memberships. Cancellations must be in writing and postmarked on the third business day after the first service is available.
