Treasurer drops bid for re-election

LORAIN — City Treasurer Tom Urbanek has dropped his re-election bid, paving the way for unopposed write-in candidate Karen Shawver to win the job.

Shawver, who serves as Urbanek’s chief deputy treasurer, had filed as a write-in candidate earlier this month after her boss told her he might not seek another term.

Urbanek, 64, said he will retire and devote more time to care for his wife, who has multiple sclerosis.

He said he has been in government for 32 years, including stints on the Lorain school board and as a long-time city councilman, before he replaced then-Treasurer Lori Maiorana in 2005 when she left to become the city’s Clerk of Courts.

“When I started adding it up, I just decided to call it a day,” Urbanek said.

Shawver had challenged Urbanek for the job in 2005 but after he convinced fellow Democrats to name him Maiorana’s replacement, he named her to the No. 2 spot in the office.

Shawver said she fully expected to one day run to replace Urbanek but was surprised when he told her he would drop out of the race.

She said she expects to mount a full campaign despite being unopposed.

“I don’t plan on taking it lightly,” she said. “I’ll be campaigning just like I would if I had an opponent.”

Urbanek said he will serve out the remainder of the year before retiring. He said he also plans to spend time with his four grandchildren and will continue to work at the hair salon he and his wife own.
