Former sleep clinic tech gets prison

ELYRIA - A former sleep clinic technician was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for groping five female patients at the clinic.

Mina Roufail, 23, apologized for his actions during his appearance before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery.

"I really don't know what to say, but I would like to say I'm really sorry," he said.

Roufail pleaded no contest in May to five counts each of gross sexual imposition and had faced up to 7½ years in prison. He could be deported to his native Egypt after serving his prison sentence.

He also was classified as a sex offender and must register for 15 years after he's released from prison.

Roufail, who lived in Parma Heights, was working at Superior Medical Sleep Lab in Amherst when he groped the five women, one of whom was 17 at the time.

Only one of the victims appeared in court Wednesday and rejected Roufail's attorney's suggestions that he had been fooling around. She said it appeared Roufail had a system for groping women while they slept.

"It's not a juvenile act, it is a sexual predator act," she said. "It is a sickness."

The clinic implemented a policy of videotaping all sleep tests after Roufail's actions were discovered.

But two of the victims have sued Roufail and the clinic arguing the clinic should have had cameras in the first place and that the clinic was negligent for hiring Roufail.
