CHICAGO — Arguably the best male soccer player to ever come through Medina County, John Nelson added another achievement on Friday afternoon when FC Dallas selected the 2017 Medina graduate with the No. 10 pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft in Chicago.
In doing so, the North Carolina sophomore became the first player from Medina County to be drafted by the MLS.
Nelson chose to forego his final two seasons after signing a contract with Generation Adidas.
A former U-17 World Cup Player, Nelson was named to the All-Athletic Coast Conference freshmen team in 2017 and was second-team All-ACC this season with the Tar Heels.
He started in all 41 games during his two seasons at Chapel Hill and helped North Carolina win back-to-back ACC Coastal Division titles as well as a College Cup appearance in 2017.
Ranked the No. 1 player in the 2017 class by College Soccer News, he was a two-time NSCAA Youth Boys All-American as well.
Dallas went 16-9-9 last season and made it to the knockout round before being eliminated by the eventual runner-up Portland Timbers.
