Ohio’s weather can change in the blink of an eye. The warm temperatures Friday morning quickly gave way to a snow and ice storm that made roads across Lorain County — and Northeast Ohio — icy and dangerous. The result was that area schools canceled or postponed their sporting events this weekend.
On Friday night, all boys basketball games in the county were postponed.
In the Patriot Athletic Conference, Firelands at Keystone and Buckeye at Wellington were postponed and haven’t announced a makeup date.
Several PAC schools did announce makeup dates through their Twitter accounts: Brookside at Black River and Clearview at Brooklyn will be made up Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.; Columbia will travel to Oberlin to take on the Phoenix tonight at 6 p.m.
In the Southwestern Conference, Amherst at North Olmsted and Avon Lake at Berea-Midpark will play their games tonight at 7:15 p.m. Olmsted Falls at Midview will be made up Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:15 p.m. The only SWC matchup featuring two Lorain County schools — North Ridgeville at Avon — didn’t announce a makeup date.
Lorain’s home game against Cleveland Heights in Lake Erie League action has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Elyria Catholic will makeup its Great Lakes Conference game at Rocky River on Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Elyria will host Euclid on Jan. 17.
Today’s girls basketball game — Columbia at Wellington in PAC play — has been postponed with no makeup date announced.
In today’s SWC action, the only game postponed is Avon at North Ridgeville with no makeup date announced.
North Olmsted at Amherst, which had moved from today to Friday night, are now back to their originally scheduled 1:45 p.m. tipoff today.
In wrestling, the Bill Dies Memorial at Akron Firestone High, which Avon and Midview were schedule to compete Friday and today, has been canceled.
The Coach Ant Classic at Westlake – which Clearview was scheduled to compete in today — and the Tiger Duals tournament at Twinsburg High — which Columbia was scheduled to compete in today – were canceled.
The Southwestern Conference hockey tournament postponed its Friday night start. Now first-round action kicks off today at North Olmsted Recreation Center with fifth-seeded Avon Lake facing eighth-seeded Westlake at 3:30 p.m. and sixth-seeded Avon battling seventh-seeded Lakewood at 5:30.
With the tournament being pushed back, the date and time for the SWC championship game has yet to be determined.
