AVON LAKE — For Avon Lake, making out of Tuesday’s Division I girls golf sectional at the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar wasn’t a reason for celebration. It was more of an expectation.

Amherst senior Elena Zaborniak, on the other hand, was elated to know she gets to play high school golf for at least one more week.

The Shoregals shot a 346 to finish second as a team and Zaborniak’s 83 earned her the fourth and final individual qualifying spot in next Tuesday’s district tournament at The Legends of Massillon.

Avon Lake junior Paighton Masterson shot a 5-over 77 to tie for medalist honors with Highland’s Alicia Porvasnik and Aly Kovach of Magnificat, which won the team title with a 332.

“It wasn’t my best round but it was OK,” said Masterson, who shot a 74 on the same course less than a week ago at the Southwestern Conference championship. “I got up-and-down a lot which was nice. “I had some weird holes today. I made some dumb mistakes that shouldn’t have happened but I also made some good putts and I put the ball where it needed to be close. If feels good to have a round like this and still be medalist because I know I can do better.”

Juniors Maggie Owen and Emma Davies shot 88 and 90 and senior Taylor Hubert had a 91 to round out the Shoregals’ lineup.

“I was a little nervous coming into today,” Avon Lake coach Krystine Frisch said. “I’m glad we made it out and I’m really excited that we took second. Last year we were third and the year before fourth. You’re always looking for that improvement. I’m looking forward on getting back to play at Legends next week.

“We’ve had a couple of practice rounds down at Legends the last two Saturdays to get the girls more comfortable with the course. We’re excited to get back down there. We want to improve on what we did last year and maybe we might be able to sneak through. The district tournament has a lot of tough competitors.”

The Shoregals finished 15th at districts a year ago.

“We have a week to work on our putting and our short game,” Masterson said. “Most of us are good at getting the ball off the ground and getting near the green. It feels good to be headed back to districts. We’ve put in a lot of work this year so to be able to get out of districts would be amazing.”

Medina (353) and Highland (363) earned the final two team qualifying spots.

For Zaborniak, who has shown consistent improvement the past four years, advancing to district is the perfect ending to her high school career.

“I knew I had to gather myself together and try to make it out because this was my last chance and I was able to do so,” Zaborniak said. “This means a lot to me because I’ve worked hard and made so much progress. The last three years I never thought I’d be a district qualifier. This summer I saw my scores dropping and I thought, well, maybe I might be able to do it this year.”

Rocky River’s Iris Shin and Wadsworth’s Secilia Ho shot 80s to earn individual qualifying spots, while Strongsville freshman Samantha Webb made it with an 82.

Although no individual awards are given at sectionals and both girls had already qualified for districts, Ohio High School Athletic Association rules mandated that Shin and Ho have a playoff for the top individual position. Shin, a three-time district qualifier, won.
