Sean Darmafall capped his career with another first-team All-Ohio baseball honor Wednesday and three other area players joined him as first-teamers.
The Elyria Catholic senior and his junior teammate Andrew Abrahamowicz were named first-team All-Ohio selections in Division III by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association. Clearview senior shortstop/pitcher Antonio Bennett moved up one slot to first team in Division II after earning second-team honors a year ago, while Avon junior outfielder Ethan St. Clair was a first-team honoree in Division I.
Two Olmsted Falls players — pitcher Collin Romel and utility man Aaron Zawadski — earned a spot on the Division I second team.
Abrahamowicz and Darmafall were big reasons the Panthers were 24-7, sixth in the state and reached the regional finals. In EC’s run to regionals, Abrahamowicz pitched a complete game in a 2-1 victory against Canton Central Catholic while Darmafall scored both of the team’s runs.
Darmafall plans to attend Sinclair Community College in Dayton. The center fielder led the Panthers with a .429 batting average. He also had nine doubles, six triples and tied for the team lead in runs scored with 34. He also knocked in 26 runs and stole 23 bases in 26 attempts.
“It’s what I’ve been working towards because I got it last year and I felt like I had an obligation to my team to be better and put them in a better position to win,” Darmafall said.
Abrahamowicz, a Nebraska commit, went 8-1, his lone loss coming on two days rest in relief against Amherst. He had a stellar 0.88 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. He recorded 63 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched, with just 18 walks.
“I really wanted this last year and seeing it this year is just 10 times better. It’s amazing,” Abrahamowicz said. “The team was an amazing group of guys. I can say they’re all best friends of mine. We just went out there and played every day, just kept going and going. We made it there and it was just a heartbreak in the end.”
Bennett, who will play baseball at Toledo, was just named Lorain County Mr. Baseball on Saturday. He went 42-of-64 at the plate for a .656 average with 11 doubles, three triples, 34 RBIs and 42 runs scored, helping Clearview to an 18-5 record.
While he plans to play infield for the Rockets, Bennett was also the Clippers’ top pitcher with a 1.21 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 23 innings, compiling a 3-1 record along with three saves. He pitched a no-hitter with one walk in the district semifinals against Bay, but the Clippers lost 1-0 because of four errors.
“I’m really happy about this because I was working for this all year,” Bennett said. “This was one of my goals, and it’s great to improve upon what I had last year and the only way better was first.”
St. Clair hit .461 and had seven doubles for the Eagles. He helped Avon go 21-8 and reach the district final where it fell to Amherst 8-4. St. Clair went 2-for-4 and scored a run in that game.
“It’s very humbling,” St. Clair said. “I’m very blessed to receive this honor. I think we met most of our goals. We wanted to win that conference championship — obviously that slipped away — but overall I think our team had a really good year.”
