Oley foursome tops at Lorain County Community College golf benefit

ELYRIA — There were some doctors in the house Monday afternoon at Elyria Country Club for the 24th Annual Jack Nicklaus-Lorain County Community College scholarship benefit golf outing.

Ed Oley, CEO of Lorain’s Mercy Hospital, and teammates Jim Stephens, Scott Pember and Jon Avellone, all associated with the hospital, shot a combined 118 to win the tourney — a two-best ball, four-man event that was highlighted by the third appearance of guest pro Mike Zeigler.

The Oley foursome barely edged the 120 shot by the team of Rich Ebner, Don Latore and Judge Joe Cirigliano.

Cirigliano was responsible for bringing Jack Nicklaus to the first tournament, held in 1990 at Spring Valley Country Club. In the years since, other notables attending were Chi Chi Rodriguez, Jan Stephenson, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Phil Mickelson, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf, Andy Bean, Ben Curtis, Andy North, Jack Nicklaus II and Fred Funk last year. In the early years, the guest pros would play 18 holes with four golfers who donated extra money to LCCC.

That feature is no longer included, as the guest pro performs at tees around the course throughout the day.

After his round, the 90-year-old Cirigliano said, “I shot my age (he’s 90).”

Cirigliano, an Elyria High graduate and longtime local judge, was a top-shelf golfer in his prime.

Zeigler, a long ball pro for many years, was on the course at various holes during the tournament, providing a powerful display of his drives. He has been a six-time world long drive finalist, with a career-long drive of 504 yards. He has participated in 70 exhibitions this year and has competed in long-ball action five times.

“I love it,” he said. “I love meeting folks.”

Brian Lackritz, Philip Amos, Morrison Carter and Dan Resar. Lackritz won the long-drive contest.
