WESTFIELD CENTER — You name it, Bryan Yeo did it well Monday in the opening round of the Ohio Open.
From hitting just about every fairway to sinking crucial putts, the Keystone graduate and Youngstown State standout finds himself in a tie for seventh heading into today’s second round at Westfield Group Country Club.
“It was a fun round,” Yeo said. “I’ve been hitting it good, but I finally made some putts today. I hit just about every fairway. “I didn’t shoot the same on the back nine, but I was never in trouble either. Everything was simple.”
Indeed it was as the Penfield Twp. resident birdied five of his first nine holes, cruising from there to post a 3-under-par 67 on the South Course to trail by three.
With the exception of one bogey before the turn, Yeo played 4 under through the first nine thanks to keeping the ball straight down the middle and finding his touch on the greens.
He kept the same momentum on the back side, playing even on eight of his last nine.
Yeo, whose most impressive birdie came on the par 5, 550-yard third hole, will play the longer North Course today.
But Yeo, who tied for 60th last year, is ready.
“We played the North Course a lot in high school, so I’m actually more comfortable there,” he said. “I don’t know how much more comfortable I can get after today.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to doing the same thing. I’m pretty confident, because I’m hitting it well.”
With the exception of an early double bogey, Elyria’s Travis Porter put together a consistent round of 70 to tie for 40th.
The rest area of the area’s golfers, like the majority of the field, are looking up at Rocky River and St. Ignatius graduate Andrew Bailey, who grabbed the lead with a 6-under 64.
Westlake’s Tom Waitrovich and Amherst’s Brian Smith shot 2-over 74s on the North Course and are in 81st place. Waitrovich opened with a pair of birdies, but stumbled in with a bogey and double bogey.
David Morgan of Wellington and Chris Capriolo of Westlake also played well on the North with 75s, while Danny Zahn (North Olmsted) and John Topeka (North Ridgeville) shot 77 and Derrick Williams (Lorain) and Joey Krecic (Columbia Station) had 78.
