Indians aim to boost attendance with ticketing, promotional options


CLEVELAND — The Indians qualified for the American League playoffs in 2013, but had the third-lowest average attendance in Major League Baseball.

In hopes of drawing larger crowds to Progressive Field this season, the Tribe unveiled a series of fan-friendly ticketing and promotional options Wednesday.

The most notable — and innovative — concept is Kids Value Tickets, which include $15 of loaded value onto each full-price seat. Children can purchase concessions or merchandise anywhere in the ballpark with their specially coded tickets, saving their parents a sizable sum at the game.

“The promotions that we come up with are almost always generated from fan ideas,” Cleveland assistant communications director Anne Keegan said. “Kids Value Tickets are an example of that.

“With the $15 loaded on those tickets, you can buy an extra popcorn or a hot dog or a soft drink or a hat — things that kids tend to ask for anyway — without spending any additional money.”

In order to take advantage of the offer, fans have to buy an accompanying full-price adult ticket in either the mezzanine or upper box seating levels. They also must be purchased online through at least 48 hours before the first pitch.

In keeping with the family theme, the $15 in free money on Kids Value Tickets cannot be redeemed for alcoholic beverages.

The Indians also announced that outfielder Michael Brantley, who recently signed a contract extension through 2017, has been added to their bobblehead list on Sept. 1. The Brantley bobble joins previously announced honorees Orel Hershiser (May 3), Nick Swisher (May 31), Michael Bourn (June 3), and Jason Kipnis (July 8).

Per another fan suggestion, the Tribe has upped the quantity of giveaway items from 10,000 to 12,500 for five promotions, including the Swisher, Kipnis and Brantley bobblehead days. Jim Thome replica statues (Aug. 2) and Omar Vizquel jerseys (June 21) also had their production numbers raised.

“We know that those promotions are some of the most anticipated on our schedule, so we’re pleased to be able to offer them to more fans than we have for similar games in the past,” Cleveland communications coordinator Joel Hammond said. “That was also the idea behind creating the Promo Pass program.”

The Promo Pass, which costs an extra $5 per ticket, allows fans to guarantee that they will receive a promotional item, regardless of when they arrive at the ballpark. It will be offered on May 3 and 31, June 21, July 8 and Aug. 2, but also must be purchased online at least two days before the game.

The Indians are continuing their dynamic pricing policy for all 81 home contests, which raises the price of tickets as the game date nears, but are offering an additional incentive to buy early in 2014.

“All tickets purchased on will be cheaper than at the box office windows or the Indians Team Shop,” Keegan said. “Even with the Ticketmaster fees, that will always be the case.”
