Crushers can't hold lead, fall to Boomers in Game 1 of Frontier League Championship Series

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Lake Erie had an answer for each of Schaumburg’s scores until the bottom of the eighth in Saturday night’s Frontier League Championship Series opener.

That's when Alexi Colon scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Brian McConkey knocked in the go-ahead run to secure a 6-5 win for the Boomers.

Crushers starter Jason Wilson lasted just 2 1⁄3 innings and gave up four runs. The Crushers trailed 4-3 before rallying in the top of the sixth. Anderson Hidalgo drove in Seth Granger on a fielder’s choice and Russell Moldenhauer then hit into another fielder’s choice to score Daniel Bowman.

Game 2 is tonight at 6 o'clock at Boomers Stadium.

The Crushers scored first on a Bowman solo home run in the first, but the Boomers lived up to their nickname when Steve McQuail cracked a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning. It was McQuail's third home run of the postseason and the Boomers' eighth.

Lake Erie tied the game in the top of the third thanks to an RBI triple from Craig Hertler and an RBI double from Granger, but the Boomers went ahead again at 4-3 in the bottom of the inning when Jordan Dean tripled and scored. That knocked Wilson, who had an ERA under 2.00 in two starts against the Boomers as a member of the Florence Freedom, out of the game.

Mike Giovenco got the win in relief for the Boomers, working one scoreless inning. Dexter Price got the save, stranding the tying runner on third in the ninth.

Dean had three hits and three runs for the Boomers, while Bowman had three hits for the Crushers.
