MEDINA — Avon served notice it was ready to defend its West Shore Conference championship. But it might not be that easy.
The Eagles, just a few days after winning the Ranger Invitational at Avon Oaks Country Club, were led by Alex Tomko’s career-best 72 Tuesday in claiming the WSC Preview title at Bunker Hill Golf Course.
Avon’s 317 team score was just a stroke better than Rocky River, which was led by Jackson Farling’s 1-over par 73. North Ridgeville was third at 323.
“Everything was working today,” said Tomko, a senior. “I only had two bogeys the whole round. This was my best tourney score ever, including four summer tournaments and several regular meets this month.”
He had a 79 in the Ranger Invite and a 76 earlier at the Comet Invitational.
Tomko’s two birdies Tuesday (on the fifth and 13th holes) were set up by near-perfect wedge shots that resulted in tap-ins.
“I didn’t have any long putts,” he said. “For the most part, I hit the ball on the green and two putted. And off the tee, I kept the ball in play.”
“The only thing I was worried about before this tournament was the kids haven’t played this course before,” Avon coach Jeff Stevens said. “So it really helped that they came to this course on their own (Monday) and played nine.
“Tompko and Sikora (Ryan) have taken turns this season having our low scores. It was Alex’s turn today. I was concerned coming into this season because we lost four seniors, but our new young players have worked their butts off, and it has showed.”
Sikora led the Eagles in last Thursday’s Ranger Invitational with a 2-over par 74.
Rocky River’s close second-place score was sparked by Farling’s 73 and Brian Tucci’s 79.
