Indians: Tribe signs Giambi to minor league deal

The Indians may have found a solution to their designated hitter dilemma.

On Saturday night, the club announced that it had signed Jason Giambi to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league spring training camp.

Giambi, 42, is a five-time all-star with the A’s and Yankees, winning the American League Most Valuable Player award in 2000. He has 429 career home runs over 18 seasons with Oakland, New York and Colorado.

But Giambi has played sparingly over the last three seasons, appearing in a combined 211 games, while amassing only 20 homers over the span. He batted .225 with a homer and eight RBIs in 60 games for the Rockies last year.
