Crushers fall short on the road

SAUGET, Ill. — Antone DeJesus is not a very gracious host.

The Lorain native and Amherst graduate hit a two-out RBI double in the fifth to help contribute to the Gateway Grizzlies’ 9-7 win over Lake Erie in the series final Thursday at GSC Ballpark.

The win was the Grizzlies’ (44-31) fourth in six games against the Crushers (42-33) this season.

Lake Erie outhit its host 13-10, but fell behind early and could not recover.

Gateway erupted for five runs in the first inning, chasing Lake Erie starter Josh Hungerman (0-1) after two outs. Rogelio Noris hit a two-run homer and John Shelby capped the inning with a three-run blast. Three walks in the inning added to the Crushers’ woes.

The Grizzlies built their advantage to 6-0 in the third on a homer by Jerod Yakubik.

J.C. Figueroa and Jason Taylor hit back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth, setting up Andrew Davis’ first of two home runs, cutting the deficit to three.

DeJesus’ double stretched the lead to 7-3.

Davis homered again in the sixth (his 11th of the season) before Wally Correa’s sac fly narrowed the lead to 7-5.

The Grizzlies roared back with a two-run homer by Jon Myers. Davis’ two-out RBI single in the seventh to drive in his fifth run of the game. Kuzdale rounded out Crusher scoring with an RBI triple in the eighth.
