District golf: Avon Lake resident Beau Titsworth shoots 67, grabs first

HINCKLEY TWP. — Beau didn’t know he had to go low, and St. Ignatius was thankful he did just that.

Avon Lake resident and first-team All-Ohioan Beau Titsworth shot a 5-under-par 67 Thursday to win medalist honors at the Pine Hills Division I District, helping the Wildcats qualify for next week’s state tournament at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course.

“I haven’t gone low in awhile. I was surprised,” he said. “I just kept going. I didn’t play defensive and went at everything.”

The senior’s score was critical for the Wildcats, who lost a fifth-man tiebreaker with Walsh Jesuit to finish third with a 304.

Matt Gerard (75) was the only other player to break 80, and Medina (306) and the Wilcats nearly knocked each other out of contention with a combined six penalty strokes.

While St. Ignatius was seven strokes ahead of Jackson for the final state berth — Stow won with a blistering 297 — Titsworth was surprised with how the team race unfolded, especially since he considered his squad a shoo-in to advance.

“Honestly, I thought we’d walk away from here rather well,” he said. “I thought we would just walk away with the tournament, but we struggled.”

Titsworth began the day hot and never looked back. He birdied six holes to more than make up for a bogey on the difficult par-3 16th.

The Oklahoma recruit’s only real trouble was on No. 13, where he missed the green left and chipped to within 20 feet. Titsworth made the par putt and cruised from there.

“I hope it’s just a foreshadowing, honestly,” he said. “It would mean more to win states, but this is pretty big.”

Titsworth also knew just qualifying for Columbus was all that mattered.

“I see guys get really excited about winning districts and I’m like, ‘It doesn’t matter. We’re going to the same place,’” he said. “I don’t understand why people are so excited about it. It’s just another tournament.”

But Titsworth proved he’s not just another golfer.

Team standings (top four teams qualify for Oct. 21-22 state tournament): 1. Stow 297, 2. Walsh Jesuit 304, 3. St. Ignatius 304, 4. Medina 306, 5. Massillon Jackson 311, 6. Aurora 316, 7.
