Little League softball: Elyria 10-11-year-olds win state; 9-10-year-olds roll in opener

One day plus two wins equals a bunch of happy players and coaches.

That was the successful formula the 10-11-year-old Elyria all-stars employed Saturday in defeating Wheelersburg twice to capture the two-team state tournament.

Elyria came up with a run in the sixth inning for a 5-4 win in the first game, then romped to a 14-2 mercy-rule victory in Game 2.

Hailey Ivan tripled and scored on Aubrey Frazier's single in the sixth inning to tie the first game at 4. Ashley Cascio then drove home the go-ahead run with a single.

Frazier, who pitched two scoreless innings to start the game, returned to the mound to seal the win. She also pitched Game 2.

Ivan was the hitting star of the day, ripping two triples, two doubles and a home run.

9-10-year-olds roll

Elyria's 9-10-year-old all-stars mercy-ruled Bucyrus 12-0 Saturday to open state tournament play in Portsmouth.

April Howser, Faith Hamilton and Rybecca Kubisen combined on a one-hitter, while striking out 10 of the 14 batters they faced.

Not only did that mean good things for the opener, it also bodes well for today's action.

"Rules at this age level make a pitcher ineligible the next day if they pitch more than two innings," Elyria manager Len Howser said. "Because April, Faith and Becca did so well we were able to spread things out and all of them are available (today)."

Elyria, which plays Wheelersburg today at 10 a.m., pounded out 10 hits in scoring three runs in the first, four in the second and five in the third.

April Howser and Kubisen both went 3-for-3 with Kubisen delivering a two-run double in the third. Rachel Boyko was 2-for-2.
