Lorain County Speedway: Avon Lake's Penn has huge night

SOUTH AMHERST - Last weekend's storms made Saturday night a double feature racing event for three divisions at the 3/8th-mile Lorain County Speedway.

The Enduro, Pure Stock and Charger divisions started the evening with feature races and ended the night in the same fashion.

Veteran Bill Penn worked  through mechanical problems to sweep the card in the Pure Stock division. The Avon Lake driver won the  dash, heat and both features, including the combined feature between the Pure and Street stock divisions.

"On the way to the track, our tow vehicle actually lost the brakes, so that was the first thing that we had to work on when we got here," said Penn. "Then, we had problems with the car and missed all of practice. We finally got out for qualifying and the car ran pretty good. The rest is history."

Penn was trailing Ryan Chapman in the Stock combined feature until lap 14. Penn was pushing for an outside groove and then drove to the inside. As he was looking for the pass, Chapman came down on him and drew a caution flag. The yellow flag gave Penn the lead for good.

"The outside groove wasn't there tonight," Penn said. "The inside groove opened up and I shot it in there. Once he gets some seat time under him, he'll be real tough. He's fast and hard to pass now."

In the modified feature, Paul Shaffer was running strong after a good jump on the first lap. He was passed by Jeff Fade Jr. on Lap 5 of the 30-lap main who held off a hard challenge from defending track champion Tigh Shaffer for the win.

The younger Shaffer had pulled even with Fade after 18 laps, but a caution flag spoiled the run when Paul Shaffer rolled to a stop right underneath the flag stand with smoke coming from his engine.

"In hot laps, the car was really loose and we had a miss in the motor," Fade said. "We came in, changed a couple things and got a little better. We didn't have a real good qualifying effort. The car was breaking up really bad. One of my crew guys came and changed the spark plugs. I went out in the heat race and the car was a lot better."

Mike Mathes and Shawn Bubsey won Charger features.

Brian Arndt won the second Enduro feature and Matt Wilson finished first in the Street Stocks main.
