Rain halts Tribe, doubleheader today

CLEVELAND — The Indians and White Sox, two teams with little to play for the rest of the season, decided to sit this one out.

With inclement conditions forecast for much of Tuesday night, the second of a three-game series between the Central Division rivals at Progressive Field was postponed.

It has been rescheduled as a traditional doubleheader today, with the first game beginning at 4:05 p.m. The second game, the Indians’ final one at home, will begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. The Progressive Field gates will open at 3 p.m.

Fans holding tickets for the postponed game can exchange them for the doubleheader today or any game in April or May of next season, excluding the home opener.

Fans holding tickets to the originally scheduled game today will be treated to two games for the price of one. Both games of the doubleheader will be shown on SportsTime Ohio.

Fausto Carmona (4-12, 6.62 ERA) is scheduled to start the first game today, while the White Sox counter with right-hander Carlos Torres (1-1, 5.91). Justin Masterson (4-9, 4.79) will start the nightcap against left-hander Mark Buehrle (12-10, 3.95).

Masterson was scheduled to start the regular season finale in Boston on Sunday, but will not pitch on short rest. Right-hander Tomo Ohka (1-4, 5.45) is expected to fill in for Masterson.

Carmona will also be making his final appearance of the season, bringing to an end a disappointing year for the former 19-game winner. The right-hander was demoted to the minors for an extended stay and has not resembled the pitcher who was an American League Cy Young Award candidate in 2007.

“It’s been a tough season for him and for us,” said Indians manager Eric Wedge, whose club was expected to challenge for the Central Division title, but entered Tuesday a season-high 28 games under .500 and in fourth place in the division, a half game in front of last-place Kansas City. “Nobody’s worked harder (than Carmona) to figure it out. It’s just been frustrating for him.

“One thing you can’t get away from him is the stuff is there. He’s proven that already.”

Season finale

Three of the four pitching matchups for the Indians’ season-ending four-game series in Boston (Thursday-Sunday) are set.

Carlos Carrasco (0-3, 9.00) will open the series at Fenway Park (7:05 p.m.), opposing LHP Jon Lester (14-8, 3.52), while Jeremy Sowers (6-10, 5.09) squares off against RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-6, 6.08) Friday (7:05 p.m.).

Aaron Laffey (7-8, 3.91) will go for Cleveland on Saturday (7:05 p.m.), the Red Sox countering with RHP Josh Beckett (16-6, 3.78).

Ohka is expected to start the regular season finale Sunday (1:35 p.m.). Boston will go with RHP Clay Buchholz (7-3, 3.21).

The first three games will be televised on SportsTime Ohio, while Channel 3 will air Sunday’s finale.
