BAY VILLAGE - If it was a secret before, it`s certainly one no longer.
"The bottom line is, we`re very low on pitchers," Tom Kubuski said after his Elyria Catholic team was trounced 17-1 by Bay in a Division II sectional game Monday. "That`s no secret, and we need pitchers to get through the week."
Certainly, the Panthers need pitchers who can throw strikes. They used five against the Rockets, including two junior varsity hurlers, and walked 10 batters in four innings.
"We gave up more walks than hits," Kubuski said. "We can`t defend the base on balls. If we can`t find the strike zone after 14 games, we are in bad shape. We can defend even the home run, until we run out of room. We can`t defend walks."
The loss dropped Elyria Catholic to 4-10. Bay (13-8) advances to play at Firelands today. EC faces four North Coast League opponents later this week.
"We have to look on the bright side," Kubuski added. "We avoided the shutout. I thought we handled their pitcher well, for being down by as many runs as we were."
Left-hander Sam Ward pitched all five innings for Bay. He gave up four hits, walked five and struck out five, and was bailed out by three outs recorded on the bases.
The EC pitchers were not nearly as effective. Sophomore Scott LaMoureaux started, but lasted for only six batters after walking two and allowing three hits. Paul Kubuski, who had a complete game Friday, faced 12 batters - yielding just one hit but walking four and hitting a batter and giving up four runs.
Craig Wiehe pitched to five Rockets before JV call-ups Tommy Strasko and Cody Reaser took care of the rest.
Bay scored four times in the first inning. Two-out singles by Jesse Hunger and Brian Taricska made the score 2-0. An infield error brought in the third run and a hit batter with the bases loaded scored the fourth.
The Rockets broke open the game in the third with nine runs on four hits, four walks and a hit batter. Mike Lehmann had a two-run double, Mason Wisner`sn three-run double made the score 11-0 and Taricska, a Kent State University baseball recruit, finished the scoring with a two-run home run.
The Panthers scored their run in the fourth. Andrew Kubuski led off with a walk and took third when Paul Kubuski doubled. Walks to Drew Spinney and Gabe Cintron forced in the run.
Lehmann hit his second two-run double to highlight Bay`s four-run fourth inning. Tim Sheehan and Wisner also drove in runs in the Rockets` fourth.
Mike Norton had two hits and two stolen bases for EC and almost gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead on an attempt to score from third when the ball got away from Lehmann behind the plate.
Lehmann retrieved the ball in time to fire to Ward, who tagged out Norton on a close play at the plate.
