LYNDHURST — Avon’s second straight trip to a Division II regional semifinal unfortunately had the same result — a loss and a long ride back home to Lorain County.
Senior midfielder Lee Bachouros scored three goals to lead defending state champion Hathaway Brown to a 4-2 win over the Eagles on Wednesday night at Brush High’s Korb Field.
The Blazers, 12-4-3, advance to Saturday’s regional final against Youngstown Cardinal Mooney at Medina. The Eagles, who lost to Chagrin Falls in a regional semifinal in 2007, leave the tournament trail with a 17-4-0 record.
Bachouros scored her first goal in the 26th minute, her shot from 30 yards away finding the upper-left corner of the net. Her twin sister Merrill was given an assist on the play.
Merrill Bachouros scored off a deflection 3½ minutes later, this time from 10 yards out, as her shot also made its way into the upper-left corner of the net. The unassisted goal gave the Blazers a 2-0 halftime lead after outshooting Avon 10-0 in the opening 40 minutes.
“We came out and started very nervously, which is uncharacteristic of us,” said Eagles coach Tony DiMacchia. “We sat back and didn’t attack as well as we usually do.”
Avon career scoring leader Megan Repas took her team’s first shot in the 50th minute. The shot resulted in a corner kick for the Eagles, which was harmlessly cleared by Hathaway Brown’s defense.
Not to be denied, Repas took a corner kick less than a minute later. Teammate Ali Fisher got enough control of the ball to glide it past the Blazers’ goalie from close range.
Avon freshman goalie Holly Kraus thwarted a Hathaway Brown breakaway nine minutes later. However, Lee Bachouros got to the ball and booted it into the open goal from 10 yards out.
Lee Bachouros scored her third goal eight minutes later when Kraus came out too far to defend, allowing the kick from 25 yards away to give the winners an insurance goal. Junior forward Lani Smith was credited with her second assist on the play.
Avon’s Devon Saini closed out the scoring five minutes later when she converted a deflection off a corner kick.
“Our girls did everything I asked of them in the second half,” DiMacchia said. “Their play was 10 times better than it was in the first half.”
