Boys basketball: Sandusky streaks past Admiral King again

ELYRIA — Sandusky did it three points at a time — and that’s the way to start a run.
The Blue Streaks, trailing Admiral King 46-43 one minute into the fourth quarter, scored four consecutive three-point plays — two the old-fashioned way — to ignite a 16-1 run and propel Sandusky to a 64-53 victory over the Admirals in the opening semifinal game of the Lorain County Holiday Classic at Elyria High.
Sandusky (4-4) will play in today’s title game against host Elyria.
“Martell (Brown) got a (basket) and one and then made a 3-point shot,” said Sandusky coach Steve Keller. “We were able to put together a nice run in the fourth quarter.”
Cole Prophet followed with a 3-point basket and Donte Walk cashed in a basket and free throw to give the Blue Streaks a 55-47 lead. Baskets by Brown and Kiewann Collins finished off the 3½-minute run and settled the issue.
It’s the second time in three weeks that Sandusky has beaten the Admirals. The two met in Sandusky on Dec. 8.
“The first time we played them they went on a big second-quarter run,” said Admiral King coach Michael Scott. “This time it wasn’t as big a run, but it came at the wrong time. We had some match-up issues and Prophet got loose for a three in transition. Then they hit another one. It was unfortunate that we let them loose.”
Scott’s club can hang its hat on the defensive effort in the second and third quarters when the Admirals held the Blue Streaks to 36-percent shooting and caused nine turnovers. The Admirals went from a nine-point deficit (22-13) to a one-point lead after three.
Sandusky stayed in the game because of its work on the glass where the Streaks held a 42-29 advantage and scored 15 points on second chances in the first three periods.
Adrian Casey had 14 points and 12 rebounds for King, but no one else got more than four boards.
Brown tossed in 23 points and Prophet had 20 for Sandusky. Rich Niehm chimed in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Christopher Kimbro scored 10 points and had several nice assists for the Admirals (3-4), but King shot only 39 percent and made just one of 11 from behind the 3-point arc.
