Browns vs. Jets: Browns win matchups, game

Jamal Lewis, Browns RB

The Browns needed 4 yards for a first down late in the fourth quarter. Lewis gave them 31 yards and a touchdown to all but seal the victory.

Lewis has come on in the last month and gives the Browns a great option to go with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow in the passing game. Lewis, who finished with 118 yards on 21 carries for a 5.6 average, also allows the coaching staff to take some pressure off quarterback Derek Anderson. Lewis added a 7-yard touchdown catch in the first half.

Eric Mangini, Jets coach

The Jets (3-10) played hard to the finish, which is a credit to Mangini. But his decision to turn the end of the fourth quarter into an onside kicking contest didn`t make sense.

Trailing 17-12 with 2:59 and all three timeouts left, he tried and recovered an onside kick. But he elected to kick a field goal from the

20-yard line on the ensuing possession instead of going for the end zone and the lead. The Browns recovered the next onside and Jamal Lewis scored his touchdown.

The Jets aren`t going anywhere, so Mangini should`ve let his young quarterback, Kellen Clemens, try to win the game from the 20-yard line. The odds of recovering two onside kicks just aren`t good enough.

In all the chaos of the fourth quarter, the Browns` goal-line stand in the second quarter may get lost. It shouldn`t.

In a scoreless game, the Jets had first down inside the 1-yard line. Defensive ends Robaire Smith and Orpheus Roye made tackles on first and second down, then safety Sean Jones intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The Browns scored later in the quarter and never trailed.

Penalties called on the Browns for a total of 29 yards. It was a far cry from the 10 flags for 77 yards that doomed the Browns in a loss to Arizona the previous week.

"It was the best run I`ve seen all year. He wasn`t going to be denied. I knew he wasn`t going to be stopped." - Running back Jason Wright on Jamal Lewis` 31-yard touchdown in the final two minutes.

Derek Anderson`s numbers were modest (16 completions, 185 yards), but he threw two touchdowns and beat his old Oregon buddy, Kellen Clemens.
