Gerus leads Olmsted Falls hockey team past Rocky River at The Q

CLEVELAND - Buddy Gerus had a monster of a game in the home of the Monsters.

The Olmsted Falls senior forward scored four goals as the Bulldogs defeated Rocky River 6-3 in a White West Division game Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena. The battle between the two prep rivals, who have already met three times this season, was the undercard for the Lake Erie Monsters` game against AHL rival Syracuse.

When Gerus wasn`t scoring goals, he was setting them up. Gerus had assists on the other Falls goals, both by Cam Brady.

"Everybody has heard me talk enough about him," Olmsted Falls coach Brian Thompson said. "You know how good I think Buddy Gerus is."

It was the second time in six days that Gerus did in Rocky River (5-2, 1-1 White West). His goal with 12 seconds left Monday gave Olmsted Falls (5-2, 1-1) a 1-0 win and the championship of the Rocky River Classic.

"We try to get these kids to charge the net," Thompson added. "Buddy did that. The kids all worked hard, and Buddy was there to finish it."

Gerus` third goal of the afternoon broke a 3-all tie. The Pirates had tied the score 4:31 into the third period, but Gerus, on assists from Brady and Dave Turner, handed the lead back to the Bulldogs 15 seconds later.

It took 55 seconds for Gerus to give himself a four-goal game and lift Falls to a two-goal advantage. Passes by Brady and Jason Kolar preceded Gerus` slap shot from the left side that managed to slip between the goal post and goalie Austin Blackwell`s right hip.

"We had trouble covering Gerus down low," Rocky River coach Don Harkins said. "We did a lot of skating down there, but didn`t accomplish much."

Brady`s second goal came against backup goalie Bridget Gipper with seven minutes left.

Rocky River struck first when Tom Gipper scored 19 seconds into a power play at 4:33 of the first period. Brady`s first goal - on a slap shot that hit Blackwell`s right shoulder, bounced over the goalie`s head and into the net - tied the score at 6:56.

Bill Evans gave River a 2-1 lead with 8:21 left in the second period, but Gerus tied it up two minutes later on an unassisted goal with Olmsted Falls playing short-handed. Gerus gave Falls a 3-2 lead after two periods on a power-play goal.

Eric Fahrenkopf tied the score for the last time before the Bulldogs tallied three times in a 3:10 stretch.
