Elyria Catholic appeared to grab the final football playoff spot in Division IV, Region 14 after two key games Saturday night went the Panthers’ way.
The news was not as good for Olmsted Falls, which apparently was eliminated in Division II, Region 5 when Padua beat Holy Name on Saturday.
The official final football computer ratings will be released today by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, but the usually reliable joeeitel.com Web site also said Elyria Catholic was in and Olmsted Falls out.
Elyria Catholic had trailed Huron for the eighth and final spot in Region 14 after Friday night’s games, but moved up when Norwalk St. Paul — beaten by EC during the season — defeated Monroeville 21-6, and Sandusky St. Mary — beaten by Huron earlier in the year — lost to Edison 28-14.
Elyria Catholic beat Cleveland Central Catholic 50-28 Friday night and Huron routed Margaretta 31-7 the same night, leaving the Tigers 0.1 point ahead of the Panthers.
But EC apparently forged ahead in the computer ratings by picking up points from St. Paul’s win while Huron got no additional points Saturday.
Elyria Catholic would join Avon Lake and Midview as the area teams in the playoffs if the unofficial numbers are confirmed by the OHSAA today.
Midview may be headed for a first-round playoff showdown with Avon Lake. The Middies were tentatively seeded eighth in Division II, Region 6 while Avon Lake had the top seed.
Elyria Catholic’s first-round opponent appeared to be Pemberville Eastwood, which was in line for the top seed in Region 14.
