Browns camp: Thursday lowdown

WHAT HAPPENED: The practice was moved inside — and therefore closed to the public — after more rain hit Berea. The Browns waited as long as they could before canceling it, but were forced to turn away the fans who came to watch Brady Quinn.
SURGERY CENTER: Outside linebacker Willie McGinest underwent surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back. He will miss at least six weeks. Outside linebacker Matt Stewart had surgery on a torn labrum and will miss the season.
STEPPING IN: Because of the injuries, Chaun Thompson will move to outside linebacker. Thompson started 15 games on the outside in 2005 before moving inside last year.
THE QB DERBY: The quarterbacks had their best day of camp. Derek Anderson threw back-to-back great balls, a post to Braylon Edwards and a cross to Joshua Cribbs in the back of the end zone. Charlie Frye made a good throw to Cribbs deep down the right sideline.
SITTING OUT: Receiver Tim Carter (thumb), cornerbacks DeMario Minter (foot) and Kenny Wright (groin), guards Eric Steinbach (knee) and Isaac Sowells (concussion) and defensive lineman J’Vonne Parker (concussion) didn’t practice.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Anderson gets the nod. After a sluggish start to camp, he’s beginning to show signs of coming out of his funk. He needs to keep it going Saturday night.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Anderson hit Kendrick Mosley on a skinny post to set up a field goal in a two-minute drill. Mosley got inside of Jereme Perry and Anderson put the ball on the money.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “We could go out there and slop around in the mud and then somebody could pull a groin or twist an ankle and then we'd be talking about more injuries. So I decided to move it inside.” — coach Romeo Crennel, on his decision to practice indoors.

The Browns will have a closed walkthrough today, then will open the preseason Saturday at home vs. Kansas City.
