Big start for Elyria Big Leaguers at softball regional


WYOMING, Mich. — Elyria’s Big League All-Star softball team got off to a strong start Saturday in regional tournament play, winning a pair of eight-inning games.
Elyria downed the Michigan state champs (District 15) 10-8, rallying with six runs in the final two innings, in the opener, then defeated Illinois 4-1 with three runs in the eighth.
Kristen Fyffe had four hits and Brianna Wade added three in the first game, while Brenda Taranto, Erin Sunagel and Alisha Mahone had two each.
In all, Elyria pounded out 17 hits. Kristin Sito, Sarah Bracey, Courtney Noster and Amy Bally also had hits.
Sito struggled on the mound, but Sunagel pitched four innings of shut-out ball to hold Michigan in check. She allowed just three hits and struck out three.
In the second game, it was Sito’s turn to shut down a team, blanking Illinois on no hits over the final four innings. She struck out four. Noster pitched two shutout innings and Wade gave up just one run over her two innings of work.
Offensively, Elyria had nine hits, led by Sito and Noster with two each. Fyffe, Bracey, Wade, Mahone and Bally all had hits as well.
Elyria is back in action today, facing Indiana at 12:30 p.m. and the host team, Michigan District 9, at 5:30.

Juniors drop opener

AKRON — Elyria’s Junior All-Stars dropped their opener Saturday 8-1 to Wisconsin in the regional tournament at Firestone Field.
Erin Pond had three hits for Elyria, while Bri Buckley added two and Jasmin Filiaggi and Alexis Cross had one each.
Filiaggi made three spectacular catches in left field, one a diving catch with the bases loaded.
Elyria is back in action today at 2:30 against Indiana and again at 7:30 p.m. against Missouri.
