Browns camp lowdown

8:45-10:45 a.m.
and 5:30-7:30 p.m.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Browns  practiced once in the heat, working on short-yardage and goal-line situations.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Running back Jerome Harrison had a good run off left tackle in a short-yardage drill, and put a nifty move on cornerback Jereme Perry after a catch over the middle in 11-on-11.
QB DERBY: Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson both looked pretty good for the second straight practice. Anderson threaded the needle to Kellen Winslow in triple coverage, but turned the wrong way on a handoff in team drills. Frye hit Winslow on back-to-back outs, then found him again on a rollout to the left.
TOO CLOSE TO CALL: Coach Romeo Crennel said the quarterback competition is so close he might flip a coin to determine the starter for the first preseason game Aug. 11 vs. Kansas City.
HOLDING OUT: Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn’s holdout reached a week, and the front office is starting to get testy.
SITTING OUT: Cornerback DeMario Minter (foot), receivers Tim Carter (tight hamstring) and Mike Mason (knee), running back Jason Wright (dizziness) and guard Isaac Sowells (dizziness) didn’t practice. Wright and Sowells stayed inside.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Travis Wilson made a nice 45-yard catch on an underthrown ball from Frye down the right sideline. Wilson showed good body control, then took the ball away from rookie cornerback Eric Wright.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “You guys are missing out. I’m quick-witted.” — Backup center/guard Lennie Friedman to the dozens of reporters who neglected to ask him for an interview after practice. He has a psychology degree from Duke.
