Big meeting between Holmgren, Mangini expected tomorrow

BEREA — Browns coach Eric Mangini said Monday afternoon he hasn't scheduled the meeting with new president Mike Holmgren that will determine his future.

Holmgren was scheduled to fly in from Arizona tonight. The meeting with Mangini is expected to take place Tuesday, and Holmgren's decision on Mangini's fate could come anytime. Holmgren said last week he hadn't made up his mind, but many national analysts expect Holmgren to fire Mangini and bring in someone with whom he's more familiar.

Mangini said he won't approach the sitdown with Holmgren like an interview.

"I have a job. I'm proud of the job I've done," Mangini said. "It's going to be a function of answering questions honestly and really having a good, honest, open discussion about the things we did this year, how things will operate moving forward.

"It's more two guys sitting down to talk about things as they are, and things how they’ll be."

In Mangini's first season with the Browns, they started 1-11 but finished with the franchise's first four-game winning streak since 1994. The 5-11 mark was the worst in the AFC North, and the Browns had the league's worst-ranked offense and 31st-ranked defense.

As the players cleaned out their lockers and stuffed their possessions into giant garbage bags after a grueling season, they faced the realization that things could be a lot different when they return for next season.

"No one knows but Mike," linebacker David Bowens said. " If he's not here, I feel sorry for Eric. Whoever comes, I’ll support them 100 percent like I did Coach.

"If he is back, we’re just going to continue to build on what we did at the end of the season."
