Robert J. "Finn" Howat, 83, of Birmingham, passed away on his birthday, Friday, September 7, 2018. He was born September 7, 1935 in Lorain, to Josephine (Brunner) Howat and Robert Howat.
Upon his graduation in 1953, from Birmingham High School, he was employed at the Lorain Steel Mill, later going to work at M. A. Harrison Mfg. in Birmingham, as a machinist. In 1969, he went to work for Gilford Instrument in Oberlin, as lead man in their Lathe Department, until the sale of the company.
He served his community as a member and Assistant Fire Chief of the Florence Township Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. After retirement, Robert enjoyed working in his beautiful vegetable garden and making maple syrup and sharing his bounty with friends. He was a member of the Wakeman Eagles and enjoyed playing cards with fellow members.
Robert is survived by his wife, Rosella (Barnes) Howat; daughter, Dawn Smith of Amherst and son, David of Vermilion; grandchildren, Jeremy Hofecker of Vermilion, Jessica Hofecker of Ocala, Florida, Adam Hering of Vermilion, Christopher (Rebecca) Smith of Amherst and Aaron (Sarah) Smith of Amherst and great-grandchildren, Caeley and Braedon Hofecker of Grafton, Max and Madison Smith of New London, Audrey Smith and Emma Smith of Amherst.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Moore; stepfather, Ralph Moore; father, Robert Howat; stepmother, Darthe Howat and daughter, Darlene (Hofecker, Hering).
The family wishes to thank New Life Hospice "Angels" for their support and comfort care in Roberts last days.
Graveside services will be held at the Birmingham Cemetery, South Street, Birmingham at 11 A.M., Saturday, September 15, 2018 with Pastor Dick Kretchmar of the Birmingham United Methodist Church officiating. A time to share memories and to celebrate Robert's life at a luncheon following the service, at the Birmingham Community Center.
