Jay "OJ" Gunter, 76, a resident of Sullivan since 1998 and formerly of Elyria from 1951-1998, has passed away at his home with family around him on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. He battled cancer for a year and a half. He was born December 22, 1941 in Crab Orchard, Tennessee.
Jay was a truck driver/dump driver for Jimmy's Trucking and Nelson Trucking of Elyria. He was a member of the Midway Baptist Church of Elyria. He found enjoyment in hunting, Blue Grass music, and loved western shows.
Mr. Gunter is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean (nee Layport); children, Sue DeMarco (Danny) of Elyria, Reannie Baker of Sullivan and Stonewall Brown of Sullivan; grandchildren, Brian and Joe McAvoy; great-grandchildren, Karlee, Cheyenne, Joey McAvoy and sister, Shirley Collette of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn "Sissy" McAvoy (1997); brothers, Lloyd Pugh and Rocky Pugh; sister, Ruth Pugh and parents, Randolph and Beatrice (nee Mcullia) Gunter.
Friends may call 3 to 7 P.M., Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Midway Baptist Church, 41812 Griswold Road, Elyria. Funeral service will be 11 A.M., Saturday at the church. The Reverend Chuck and The Reverend Rick Keesee will officiate. Burial will follow in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.
