John E. Schmidkons, 84 and a longtime resident of Vermilion, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain, after a long illness. John was born in Elyria, December 29, 1933, to the late Walter E. and Lauretta A. (nee Krugman) Schmidkins.
He was a 1952 graduate of Elyria High School. John enlisted in the United States Air Force and served from 1952-1956. He was an Electrical Project Manager for R. E. Warner & Associates, Westlake, where he was employed for 35 years retiring in 1999. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, photography and most of all spending time with his family.
He was a life member of Amvets Post 22, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7576 and American Legion Post 397, all of Vermilion. John was also a member of Brownhelm Historical Association.
He was survived by his wife of 58 years, Myrna D. (nee Thiery); three daughters, Linda (John) Coss of Amherst, Colleen (Tom) Gimben of Vermilion, Jean (Jeff) Kromer of Vermilion; 12 grandchildren and sister, Phyllis Brotherton of Oberlin.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Myron and sisters Ruth, Virginia and Esther.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 P.M., Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. The funeral service will be 11 A.m., Friday, July 20, 2018 at Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ, 2144 North Ridge Road, Vermilion. Burial with Military Rites will follow in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
