Dorothy Walter Bartter (nee Ballard), 92, of Dearborn, Michigan, formerly of Naples, Florida and Elyria, passed into Eternity at Henry Ford Village Sunday, October 29, 2017. She was born in North Olmsted, September 29, 1925.
She was a graduate of Olmsted Falls High School, a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College with a degree in home economics and a graduate of Kent State University with a Master's degree in library science.
Dorothy raised three children and helped her husband in their tomato greenhouse business in Sheffield Village. Later in life she went back to school to get her teaching degree and became the librarian at Tennyson Jr. High School and later the head librarian at Brookside High School in the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School System, retiring in 1985. Books and family continued to be her passion the rest of her life.
Dorothy had many accomplishments, including winning karting "powder puff" championships, golfing championships and riding bicycles with her husband, Rowland into her late 80's. Dorothy enjoyed traveling and once cruised on the QE2 to Europe, then traveled to Australia flying home on the supersonic Concord. She was a past member of the Columbia Methodist Church, the Avon United Methodist Church and the Unity Church of Naples, Florida.
She is survived by her loving husband, Rowland M. Bartter; son, James B. Walter (Gloria) of Elyria; daughters, Margaret A. Walter Fontes of Port Neches, Texas and Sharon L. Russell (Eric) of Pine, Colorado; granddaughter, Sarah Walter McAnany; grandsons, Stephen Walter, Gallagher Russell and three great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, Wesley A. Walter, who died in the "Blizzard of '78"; companion of 10 years, Earl Pesta; parents, Ruth P. Ballard (nee Gadd) and Theodore D. Ballard; sisters, Marge Knapp Stiffler and Betty Bonham and grandson, Michael Fontes.
Her family requests all to gather Saturday, November 11, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Elyria, 11400 Lagrange Rd., Elyria, for visitation at 10 A.M. and the memorial service at 11 A.M. to honor Dorothy's life. The Reverend Patrick Odle, Senior Pastor of First Baptist will officiate. Interment will be in Garfield Cemetery, Sheffield Village.
The family suggests donations in Dorothy's name be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
The Voran Funeral Home of Dearborn, Michigan is helping with final arrangements.
