Michael "Gilley" Gilbert, 55, passed away suddenly, Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Oberlin. Mike was born August 14, 1961 in Oberlin, to Clyde Richard Gilbert and Norma Beese Gilbert. He graduated from Oberlin High School, in 1981 and completed a few years of college at a community college.
He previously worked with Super's Landscaping and TK Monroe's Heating and Cooling. Mike was a volunteer Oberlin firefighter and began his career with Oberlin College Safety and Security at the Allen Art Museum in 1993, where he was still employed.
Mike married Tammy (Barkacs) Gilbert April 27, 1999 and he was the proud father of Cody Gilbert (15). He loved working on his 1972 Buick, racing, soccer, supporting the OHS Marching Band, helping others in his neighborhood and community, camping and just being with family and friends. He was an Assistant Scout Leader to Troop 401 and assisted his son, Cody, to earn his Eagle Scout Award Sunday, March 26, 2017. His passion was his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband and father and was loved by all that knew him.
He is survived by his father, Clyde Richard Gilbert and mother, Norma (Beese) Gilbert of Oberlin; Patricia (Gilbert) Clough (Tom Matovich) of Richfield, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, David Gilbert in 1990 and Jeff Gilbert in 1957.
A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held Sunday, April 23, 2017, from 1 P.M., until 4 P.M., at the New Russia Township Hall, 46300 Butternut Ridge Road, Oberlin.
There will be a Mike Gilbert Memorial endowment fund held by the Oberlin City Schools Endowment Fund. Grants will be specific to support history oriented requests since this was a passion of his. There will also be a trust fund set up to support his son, Cody Gilbert, in memory of Mike.
