Martha MacBride Wise-Spaulding

Martha MacBride Wise-Spaulding (nee Wilkin), 80, of Avon, since 1990, formerly of Elyria, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Ames Family Center/Hospice of the Western Reserve/ Westlake Campus, after a short illness. She was born July 28, 1933, as a ward of Summit County until her adoption in 1934. She came to Elyria upon her marriage to Wayne C. Wise, Jr., whom she met at Ohio Wesleyan University. They lived in Elyria 32 years, before moving to Avon. She graduated from the Andrews School, Willoughby, Ohio in 1952.

Martha was a 28-year elected member of the State Board of Education of Ohio and was the second longest serving member of the Board Since it began in 1957. She was a two-time President of the State Board in 1979-80 and 1999-2000 and served as chair of many committees. She made numerous contributions to education at local, state and national levels. She was president of both the Eastgate PTA and later the Elyria PTA Council.

Martha was a member of the Avon United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, knitting and loved to travel. The Elyria League of Women Voters piqued her interest early-on in civic involvement along with her PTA activities.

Survivors include her husband since April 2010, Gerry Spaulding; son, W. Christopher Wise of Olmsted Falls; six grandchildren, Amy MacBride Schneck of North Ridgeville, Philip Anthony Walker of Lorain, Jennifer Lynn Walker of Elyria, Lindsay Nichole Gilchrist of Grafton, Megan Elizabeth Wise and Ryan Christopher Wise of Columbia Station and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Aubrey.

Preceding her in death were her father, John Nugen Wilkin; adoptive mother, Mildred Elizabeth Wilkin; second adoptive mother, Kathryn Williams Wilkin; husband, Wayne C. Wise, Jr.; brother, John MacBride Wilkin; and daughter, Julia Lynn Gilchrist.

Memorial services will be held at Avon United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 10:30 A.M., with Pastor Liz officiating. Graveside services will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio, Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11 A.M. for family and immediate friends.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Avon United Methodist Church, any education endowment fund, Ohio PTA, Animal Protective League, Library of your choice or Hospice of the Western Reserve.
