Charles L. Haney, Jr., 90, passed away at home with his family, Monday, July 14, 2014, following a long illness. He was born August 22, 1923 in Elyria and resided in the Lorain County area most of his life.
Charles attended the Elyria Public Schools for 12 years, enlisting in the United States Army, shortly after high school. He served during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart in recognition of injuries sustained in the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, Charles returned to his job as a lace weaver at the Elyria Lace Factory, until its closing.
Charles enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although most lived out of state, he always enjoyed the entertainment the little ones provided on their visits home. Charles loved being outdoors, mowing and caring for his yard and gardens. When his illness made that impossible, he would just enjoy sitting outside in the warmth and sunshine.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Shirley (nee Palme); his son, Thomas (Virginia) Haney of Pueblo, Colorado; his daughter, Tamara (Robert) Verhoff of LaGrange; seven grandchildren, Sean (Jennifer) Haney, Jennifer (Rayo) Nulsen, Janel (Brian) Lyons, Jeffrey (Andrea) Verhoff, Kristy (Eric) Souser, Joel (Raelin) Verhoff and Benjamin (Veronica) Verhoff; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Schneider; and his parents, Charles, Sr. and Mary Haney (nee Driscoll).
Friends may call Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, from 6 until 8 P.M.
