Rick "Red" Widener, 64, of Sheffield Lake, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Rick was born June 18, 1949 in Lorain and was raised in Sheffield Lake and graduated from Brookside High School in 1969.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the Vietnam War. Rick was employed as a laborer at various foundries during his career including Thew Shovel, Lorain and Electro Alloys, Elyria.
Rick was a member of A.A. since 1977. He enjoyed bowling and fishing, outdoor activities and watching birds in his back yard, spending time with his cats and writing poetry. He most recently published a book of poetry, "Love Conquers All Things."
Rick is survived by his wife of 39 years, Donna (nee Reip); daughters, Joy Widener of Lorain and Jeannine Burls (Mark) of West Carrollton; two brothers, Larry of North Carolina and Brad of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Mabel G. Widener (nee Durbin).
Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Road, Avon, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M., Saturday, May 17, 2014. An A.A. prayer service will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 4 P.M.
