Reverend Joe Griffith

Beloved Pastor, husband, father, and friend to all, has gone to be with the Lord. The Reverend Joe Garneal Griffith, 83, of Elyria, was born May 9, 1931, in Robbins, Tennessee and completed his journey Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in Avon Lake. He was living proof that "God is still in the miracle business". He fought various illnesses before receiving his last and greatest miracle: total healing in Heaven with Jesus Christ.

Brother Joe was a corporal in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War as part of the Fighting Red Devils. He also served the Lorain County Deaf Association.

Brother Joe fell in love with the Lord at a revival at the Ninth Street Church of God in Elyria and shortly thereafter, accepted his call into the full time ministry. He was ordained in 1966 and served as Senior Pastor at churches in Elyria, Bloomingdale, Fremont, Rittman, and Pekin, Illinois. He spent over 35 years in the ministry with his most recent position as founder and Senior Pastor of First Community Church of God in Lorain.

Brother Joe's heavenly home-going reunited him with his parents, Sudley and Charity (Sexton) Griffith; sisters, Ozel Clark, Evalie Matney, Jean Gray; brothers, Zenal and Zethra Griffith; and numerous other family, friends, and former congregations' members.

Brother Joe's memory will live on through his loving wife of 61 years, Camilia "Faye" Griffith; children, Garry Griffith of Elyria, David and Karen (Swartz) Griffith of Vickery; Darlene and Garry Fister of Manito, Illinois; Theresa and Bill Saganes of Medina; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He and Faye opened their home to their extended family: Sally Bowen, Gail Douthitt, and David Lay.

We will celebrate Brother Joe's life through visitation, Monday, May 12, 2014, from 3 until 6 P.M., at First Community Church of God in Lorain, with the funeral service immediately following at 6 P.M. Reverend Garry Griffith and Steve Carney will officiate. Full military burial for the family will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 2:30 P.M., at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Community Church of God, 1330 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Lorain, OH 44053.

Arrangements are in the care of Wyers Funeral Chapel of Elyria.
