Virginia Bates

Virginia (Queen Bee) Bentley Bates, born in Floyd County, Kentucky on December 5, 1932, passed peacefully at home with her loving husband and family by her side on Wednesday, April 2, 2014.

Mrs. Bates was a doting mother, loving wife and awesome grandmother. She was an avid animal lover, enjoyed golf, swimming, cooking and her family. She was a defender of underdogs everywhere.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Arthur Bates; her children, Linda Bates Polansky (George) of Crossville, Tennessee, Frank Bates (Sandi) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Mike Bates (Terri) of LaGrange, Sharon Bates Rhome (Scott) of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Chris Bates (Pauline) of Statesville, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren; her sisters, Helen Hall of Kite, Kentucky and Shirley Dennis, North Royalton; her brothers, Homer Bentley of Wayland, Kentucky, Don Bentley of Cleveland and Charles Bentley of Elyria. She loved, and was loved by many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Bates Potanus (Robert) of Grafton; her parents, Clara and Arthur Bentley of Wayland, Kentucky; her sister, Joyce Wireman of Augusta, Georgia; her brothers, Boone Bentley of Wayland, Kentucky and Ed Bentley of Wabash, Indiana.

A graveside service will be 11 A.M., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4290 Old York Rd, Rock Hill, South Carolina, with Rev. Bruce Kiser officiating.

The Bates family would like to thank the dedication of the caretakers, Annie McConnell and Crystal Neeley, for their exceptional love and care.

Thanks, too, to the staff at Interim Healthcare, especially to Lindsey Mear and Sheila Mullis.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M., Friday, April 4, 2014 at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
