Elton E. Fazey

Elton E. Fazey, 94 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Avon Oaks Assisted Living following a long illness. He was born February 3, 1920 in South Amherst, and was a resident of South Amherst, before moving to Avon Oaks.

He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Elton severed for three years in the Northern France where he received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Victory Medal and the Europe American Theater Ribbon with a bronze star. He was employed as a boilermaker at U.S. Steel Corporation in Lorain for 35 years before retiring. As a young child he learned how to play the harmonica and enjoyed playing it his entire life.

Survivors include his brother in law, John Vargo and his wife Rosella of Vermilion; nieces Sharon O'Neil his primary care giver of South Amherst, Shirley Kerekes of Elyria, Carol McBennett and her husband Patrick of Birmingham and other nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Emma M. Fazey (nee Vargo) on January 16, 2007; his sisters, Lucille Norton, Frances Fazey; and his parents, Thomas and Clara Fazey (nee Mackert).

Friends may call Wednesday, February 12, 2014 from 10 A.M. until the time of the funeral service at 11 A.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Rev. Roger Loomis, chaplain of Crossroads Hospice, will officiate. The Vermilion Veterans Military Counsel will provide full military honors. Private burial will take place privately by the family.
