Dudley Allen Wood, Jr.

Dudley Allen Wood, Jr., 94, of Oberlin, quietly passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Welcome Nursing Home after a short illness. Born on March 27, 1919, Dudley was a life long residence of Oberlin.

After graduating from the University of Miami, Ohio, Dudley served in World War II at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Intelligence and map making. Dudley was the oldest of three sons born to Dudley and Catherine Wood, Sr. After the war, he worked for T.O. Murphy Plumbing before taking over Wood Florist Shop and greenhouses upon the death of his father.

In the 1950’s, he served as a Deacon of the First Church of Oberlin. In his career and in his hobby, he was devoted to gardening. In his senior years, Dudley enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, neighbors and his breakfast buddies at the Oberlin Inn and Quick and Delicious. Dudley was a life time member of the Allen Art Museum and frequent contributor to the First Church building fund.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Jane Fitkin Wood (born in Toledo.

Dudley is survived by his daughters, Susan J. Wood of Albany, Catherine E. Wood of St. Louis; grandson, Thomas Makely of Albany; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Walter (Lee) Wood of Iowa City and Mrs. Howard (Janet) Forster of Toledo; and nieces and nephews.

There will be a private family burial in Westwood Cemetery at a later date.
